NHTSA complaint 11726284The contact owns a 2024 Winnebago Rebel Motorhome built on a 2023 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 Chassis. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the secondary alternator was making an abnormal whining sound. While depressing the accelerator pedal, the sound increased. The RPM decreased. The battery was at 5 amps. While driving, the whining noise continued. The charge rate decreased. The charging battery was at negative 110 AMPS. There was smoke detected from the battery. The wires were melted on the alternator. The contact turned off the battery. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact called the local dealer, who replaced the battery and alternator. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was contacted, but no additional assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 11,000.
NHTSA complaint 11639628Our brand new 2024 Winnebago Revel was smoking/caught fire from the lithium house battery while driving from Washington state to Alaska. The incident occurred right before US customs on the highway to Alaska. House power failed while driving so we pulled over to diagnose the issue, when attempting to restore power to the vehicle, the positive terminal of the battery began smoking/caught fire. I immediately cut off the breaker and the alternator disconnect. Since the lithium battery is so large this could have spread and burned the entire vehicle, possibly harming my wife, our dog and myself. This was reproduced by the Winnebago service center in Anchorage, Alaska upon our arrival. There were no warnings or symptoms, if we had not noticed the power failure to the house systems we would have not known to pull over and inspect the battery.
