Reading a vehicle page

Counts, not rates

NHTSA publishes no sales or registration figures, so a popular vehicle draws more complaints and covers more recalls. Each vehicle page puts its counts beside comparable vehicles instead.

Severity index

Complaints that involved a crash, a fire, an injury or a death, as a share of all complaints, times 100. A complaint counts once however many apply.

Peer index

A vehicle's complaints against the median vehicle of the same model year and body class, where 100 is the median. It corrects for age, not for sales.

First 24 months

Complaints filed from September 1 of the year before the model year, through the following 24 months, so every model year is compared at the same age.
