Vehicle and gives error code "Service Safety Restraint System" and Airbag Icon comes on. I drive a 2024 model RS and have not had this vehicle for a full year. The warning comes on periodically. Sometimes when I used the auto start or when the key is used. It also can happen while im driving or after parking. It goes away if I restart the vehicle but eventually comes back on. The code machines can't find an active code.
NHTSA complaint 11768150When driving with my [XXX] old “service power steering” message came on and instantly lost all power steering. Almost got on a head on collision. Car has no power steering. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
NHTSA complaint 11767277I bought a brand new 24’ chevy Trax 2RS in November of 2023. By August of 2024 the Trax was already leaving orange coolant on the ground. I took it into the dealership August 22nd 2024 for service and repair; after a few hours they called me and let me know that they could not find the leak so they changed the oil and sent me on my way. Come September 2024 my 3 small children and I were on a road trip in Mexico La Rumorosa Mountains highway 2 when I noticed my car overheating on the temperature gauge; pulled over immediately found the coolant reservoir completely empty, the radiator was empty from coolant as well, so I filled it up with drinking water. Took it to the dealership on September 19th 2024 were they found the culprit to be a bad radiator a cracked thermostat housing & a bad coolant reservoir (all covered by warranty) car only had 12,000 when I started to notice the documented leak. By 13,400 miles is when the radiator failed completely. Most of the parts were on national back order, got a rental car for the time being until October 8th of 2024 when my car was fixed. Prior to all of that issue happening there was another issue while driving the car; after an auto start / stop event the car would run sloppy, (secondary power surge). Took it into the dealership they “fixed” it with a recall number (A242435780). I Strongly believe the motor suffered way more damage from the overheating than they are leading me on to believe. This is my second complaint filed here regarding the same vehicle.
NHTSA complaint 11767133Over the last 18 months the check engine light has come on multiple times while driving. Each time the check engine light came on, the vehicle was taken to the dealer. I was initially told by the dealer that they could not figure it out but to bring the car back if it happens again. Each time after taking the vehicle to the dealer for the check engine light, the dealer added oil to the vehicle. On one occassion the vehicle decelerated suddenly while driving. I reported the incident in a survey that I received from the dealer after an oil change. In April 2026, the dealer said that the engine appears to be consuming too much oil and an oil consumption test is needed. In September 2026, the vehicle was taken to the dealer after the check engine light came on and the dealer stated that an engine rebuild is needed and GM would be contacted.
NHTSA complaint 11767077September 20th 2026: I was driving my 2024 Chevrolet Trax up a grade (Mountain) approximately 11AM, Driving Normally at Highway speeds, normal highway conditions, temp outside was close to 100 Degrees Fahrenheit, suddenly with no warning half way up the mountain the car lost power, check engine light turned on (Engine Power Reduced) came on, I had no option but to pull over on the highway with only 41,500 miles on the odometer. Being over 200 miles away from my home I felt devastated. Made an appointment the next morning to have the car checked out by the Chevrolet Technicians at the dealership, they stated the Turbo completely failed, the part was on a slight back order they pushed through and it took a week to get this repair done. Previous to the Turbo failing, approximately at 36,000 Miles on the odometer on or about January of 2026: I get in my Trax and the A/C will not blow cold air, took it in for service at the same dealership come to find out the A/C condenser failed or ruptured leaking Freon, I paid $1,800.00 on an expense out of pocket that was not covered by any warranties.I Even purchased the extended warranty when I bought the car with 0 miles in November of 2023. Previous to the A/C condenser failing with no warning what so ever, on November 2025 I go open my car and the remote unlock feature does not work due to a completely dead battery car would not start or open. The car had to be towed to the dealership because after they jump started it the transmission started clucking really hard when shifting into Drive. The culprit according to Chevrolet Dealer Service Advisors was just a dead battery(covered by warranty) , yet the car gave no signals of a dying battery.after picking up Car I noticed rough idle and performance after this incident, I took it back to get checked out the same day and they could not “replicate” the symptoms, they stated that they can only fix it when the car blows up since it wasn’t showing any Check engine lights. NHTSA complaint 11767067I took my car to the dealership twice due to the CarPlay not working, screens going black, rattling noises, and the transmission shuddering, jerking, and jumping. The mechanic that test drove it stated it was a rough ride and the car did not return to first gear. The transmission fluid was black with metal debris. They rebuilt that same transmission and since then my car has been way worse. I reached out the dealership had a mechanic drive it, but every time he’d say oh that was my big foot. I asked why the 1 on the RPMs and the P on the gear shift flash while in park then my car shakes loudly. He laughed and said it was normal. We returned to the dealership the manager came out with my keys and said I am glad we found it safe and sent me on my way.
NHTSA complaint 117668422024 Chevrolet Trax 1RS, approximately 66,000 miles. I was driving on the interstate at approximately 77 mph when I suddenly heard a very loud bang from the engine area. Immediately afterward, the vehicle began smoking both inside and outside, and there was a large black cloud of smoke behind the vehicle. The engine stalled and I lost propulsion while traveling at highway speed. I was able to move the vehicle to the side of the interstate. The vehicle then displayed a warning stating, “Oil pressure low, turn car off immediately.” I shut the vehicle off and did not continue driving. The vehicle had to be towed to an authorized Chevrolet dealership. The Chevrolet repair order dated August 10, 2026 documents the concern as a loud engine noise and notes that the tow/wrecker driver reported a hole in the engine block. Chevrolet’s inspection marked the engine oil, fluid leaks, and cooling system as “Alert.” At the same inspection, the engine oil-life monitor showed 93%. Chevrolet recommended removal and replacement of the engine long block. The dealer estimate lists $11,106.14 for the long-block replacement and approximately $13,420.89 in total pending recommendations. GM has agreed to provide partial financial assistance toward the engine replacement, leaving me responsible for approximately $5,200. The replacement engine is currently on backorder, and the vehicle remains inoperable while awaiting an engine. I am filing this complaint because the engine failed suddenly while I was traveling approximately 77 mph on an interstate. The loud mechanical failure, smoke, engine stall, and sudden loss of propulsion created a serious safety risk. I am concerned that this may be related to similar engine failures being reported in Chevrolet vehicles equipped with the 1.2L turbocharged engine. I have retained the Chevrolet inspection report, repair estimate, photographs of the engine following the failure, GM case information, and documentation concerning the replacement.
NHTSA complaint 11761098My 2024 Chevrolet Trax is currently operating with a suspected internal engine defect tied to active Safety Recall A242435780. On 7/27/2026, Michael Hohl Chevrolet performed the software patch for this recall. However, severe internal engine noise remains. On my official repair order, the Shop Foreman test-drove the vehicle and explicitly documented: 'suspects could be something internal will need further diagnostics. Despite this documented internal engine concern tied to a federal safety recall, GM Corporate (Case #[XXX] (tel:[XXX])) and the dealership refuse to cover the diagnostic engine teardown. GM Customer Assistance formally told me to stop driving if the noise worsens, shifting the safety liability to me while refusing to remedy the defect. A sudden internal engine failure while driving will result in an immediate loss of motive power, power steering, and braking assistance, creating a severe crash hazard. NHTSA complaint 11758819Total blackout. Lost all electronics, engine shut off and power steering gone while driving
NHTSA complaint 11758763The instrument cluster and center console display intermittently appears to lose power, although in at least one incidence, the back-up camera display still worked while in reverse. Without instruments it is impossible to determine speed which can be hazardous. The vehicle is scheduled to be looked over by the dealer on 8/21/26. To my knowledge, there have not been any symptoms or warning signs prior to any of the incidents where a power loss occurred.
NHTSA complaint 11758165Headlight Issue While driving at night on a dark country road the headlights all of a sudden reduced visibility to about 5 feet and had a blacked out dead spot (like a dark shelf). We had to drive roughly 25 miles with this limited visibility which was extremely dangerous and nerve racking. The visibility range improved the next day but the dead spot (shelf) is still visible and visibility is still poor and limited to about 100 feet. This still makes night driving very difficult and dangerous. I contacted dealership regarding issue and all they did was raised the headlights 3 inches. This only raised the dead spot up a little bit but is still visible. I notified them a second time and no action was taken because there was no recall for this issue on vehicle. In 2022 models there was a recall for the exact same issue.
NHTSA complaint 11755631The check engine light illuminated on my 2024 Chevrolet Trax at 36,883 miles. An authorized Chevrolet dealer, Advantage Chevrolet of Bridgeview in Bridgeview, Illinois, diagnosed a failed evaporative emission canister purge pump and replaced it on August 6, 2026. I paid $729.46 out of pocket. I am filing this complaint because General Motors has already identified this exact part as defective and extended warranty coverage for it — but not for my model year. The part installed in my vehicle, shown on my invoice, is GM part number 25207556. That part number is listed by name in the Parts Information table of GM Special Coverage bulletin N242484740, which identifies four interchangeable evaporative emissions canister purge pumps: 12741165, 12741163, 25207556, and 12726033. That bulletin extends coverage on this component to 15 years or 150,000 miles for the 2022 Chevrolet Trax, 2022 Silverado 1500, 2022-2023 Blazer, and multiple Buick, Cadillac, and GMC models. A prior program covered 2020-2021 vehicles. My 2024 Trax failed with the same part number GM covers for fifteen years on the 2022 Trax. The failure occurred at 36,883 miles — five days after my 3-year bumper-to-bumper warranty expired on August 1, 2026, based on an in-service date of August 1, 2023. The failure illuminates the malfunction indicator lamp, which masks any other diagnostic trouble code that may set behind it, increases evaporative hydrocarbon emissions, and causes automatic failure of Illinois OBD-based emissions inspection. GM has now issued purge pump coverage extensions twice, for 2020-2021 and again for 2022-2023 vehicles. The same component is failing on 2024 vehicles at comparable mileage. I believe the defect extends to the 2024 and later model years and that coverage should be extended accordingly.
NHTSA complaint 11755544At 38,000 miles the right sway bar stabilizer linker failed and required replacement. This was inspected by a manufacturer associated dealer mechanic. No other symptoms or warning lamps prior to the failure.
NHTSA complaint 11754906I was at a complete stop with my foot all the way down on my brake, sitting in traffic, and my car started rolling forward against my will. I pressed down on my brake again and the car did not stop. I almost rolled into the car in front of me. The forward collision warning did not sound. I put my car in park and it still did not stop. I then put it into reverse to avoid rolling into the car in front of me. The car stopped. I put it back in drive, and the car jolted forward and the brakes continued to work. I have since taken it in and the master cylinder was failing. My brakes were only working sometimes. I am incredibly lucky that this happened when my car was stopped and not at a high speed, on the freeway, or in an area where I could have accidentally hit a pedestrian. At the time of the incident, no lights have every been/were lit up on the dash alerting me to an issue or failure with the car. The problem was confirmed and reproduced at the dealership. The master cylinder has been replaced and the brake system update has been completed. I want to reiterate how incredibly ridiculous and dangerous this could have been. It is unacceptable that this is not a formal recall as I have been notified that there is general knowledge of this problem. I have 2 small children that were in the car with me and this could have ended very differently had the conditions been different.
NHTSA complaint 11754720We were driving on the highway when the Trax suddenly made a popping sound, all the electric went off, and then the engine cut off. We lost control of steering for a bit, we're able to get to the side of the road. We had the car towed to the local Chevrolet dealer for diagnostics. The service manager informed me the engine is unrepairable due to a hole in the engine block, likely where the engine threw a rod. In order to get the engine replaced we have to have it towed to a second dealership, which we are in the process of doing now. I just purchased this vehicle 3 weeks ago without knowing this issue was a possibility
NHTSA complaint 11750739catastrophic internal failure (e.g., connecting rod issue punching the block),
NHTSA complaint 11750734The contact owns a 2024 Chevrolet Trax. The contact stated that while driving approximately 25-35 MPH, the front center of the vehicle crashed into the center rear end of another vehicle; however, the air bags failed to deploy. The contact was distracted by an ambulance approaching and did not notice that the vehicle in front had braked. No warning lights were illuminated. A police report was filed. The contact sustained a fractured rib, struck her head on the steering wheel, had a nose bleed, laceration to the lips, and bruised cheeks. The contact previously had rib surgery, which the doctors were concerned about due to the impact. Medical attention was needed. The contact researched and was made aware of an undisclosed recall; however, the VIN was not under recall. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard to be diagnosed; however, the vehicle was not yet diagnosed. The mechanic stated that the vehicle might be a total loss, but the insurance company had not yet declared the vehicle a total loss. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 11,000.
NHTSA complaint 11750423The contact owns a 2024 Chevrolet Trax. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 - 50 MPH, the message that an update was needed was displayed. The contact selected to complete the update later; however, the computer system continued to perform the update, causing all indicators, screens, and displays to black out. The contact was able to drive to the residence. The following morning, the systems operated correctly, and the update had completed. While attempting to turn off the vehicle, the radio failed to turn off at the same time. The contact had to first turn off the radio manually. While driving approximately 40 MPH, the message “Power Steering Fluid Low - Drive with Care” was displayed. The contact was able to make it to a stoplight after idling and then attempting to make a left turn, but the vehicle failed to exceed 6 MPH. The contact drove to Auto Zone. A certified mechanic confirmed that the power steering fluid was low. The certified mechanic diagnosed the vehicle, and the check engine warning light was displayed. The contact confirmed that the warning light was illuminated; however, when the mechanic inspected the vehicle, the warning light was no longer illuminated. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was informed of the issue and was unable to provide a cause for the failure. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 29,000.
NHTSA complaint 11749936The display system on serval occasions has been blinking on and off. I can not touch the entertainment display system and the speedometer display also malfunctions not displaying correct speed and malfunctioning the blinker light, back up camera, etc. I have videos of occurrences which I can not upload. This has happened in multiple occasions. The dates of occupancies are 6/7/26,6/17/26,7/7/26, and 7/8/26. The display even flickers when the car is turned off.
NHTSA complaint 11748975I have a 2024 Chevy Trax Activ that was originally purchased in British Columbia, CA and subsequently purchased through a private dealer in New Mexico. It has just gone over the 36,000 mile warranty. The infotainment system including the speedometer will occasionally flicker and go black. Additionally the metric to US conversion of mileage will revert back to metric once the vehicle is shut off and restarted. This happens intermittently. There are also USB and Bluetooth connection issues. The vehicle does not show up under any bulletins or recalls as the origin was initially purchased in Canada. This problem has been reported to GM and Chevy customer service. How do I add this to the recall and NHTSA bulletin so I can get this repaired?
NHTSA complaint 11747222Technical service bulletins and other notices the manufacturer sent to dealers. A bulletin is not a recall; the 60 most recent are listed.
