Driver 1 stated: “I was traveling in the right lane and going straight. The other truck was on the right shoulder. I was attempting to merge into the middle lane to provide additional space for the truck on the right shoulder. However, there was another vehicle in the middle lane, so I was unable to merge. I subsequently struck the truck that was stopped on the right shoulder.” Driver 2 stated: “We were on the right shoulder because the truck was experiencing mechanical issues. We were then struck from behind.” Investigation Findings The investigation revealed that Vehicle 1 (V1) and Vehicle 2 (V2) were traveling on the New Jersey Turnpike (NJTP) near milepost 99.5 in Elizabeth County. Vehicle 2 was stopped on the right shoulder due to mechanical issues. Driver 1 failed to maintain proper directional control of Vehicle 1 and subsequently struck the rear of Vehicle 2, which was stopped on the shoulder. A passenger in Vehicle 2 complained of neck and back pain but declined medical attention at the scene. Both vehicles were towed from the scene by Highway Towing, AIS 208.
